Why do we use mercury in barometers instead of other liquids??

We check atmospheric pressure with the help of barometer.in some barometers mercury is used . so, why do we use mercury in the preparation of barometers instead of other liquids???...

Is all metel used in crowns now mercury free? or do they still use it in crowns?

Also what is a base metal and what is a noble metal?...
