Loud clicking noise when ignition key is turned to start position. starter does not operate but lights and windscreen wipers work....

86 lincoln towncar battery discharges overnite. where to start trouble-shooting?

Thanks for all the answers.battery checked nice. alternator nice.found that rear window defroster was coming on randomly.removed fusible link from starter relay for time being....
