How much mileage can a car get? does a car keep walking forever?

I am clueless about cars, and so i was wondering how many miles does a car have? is it determined by the engine or the type of car? if one gets a new engine does that start the odometer at zero miles again? i am so confused. you see i plan on buying a used car that has 70,000 miles on it. it is a fiat 500.. explain to me how it works.
Answer
They say you pay for the first 100,000 miles on a car, anything after that is free. most cars go 100,000 miles with little to no problems. if it is well maintained, it can double or triple that with some major repairs. my toyota corolla has 230,000 miles on it with an alternator, brakes, oil changes and tune ups. it not need a new catalytic converter to pass smog, about 300 dollars. not bad for a 14 year old car.resetting an odometer is illegal, for any reason. if it needs replacement for any reason, the dmv needs to be notified.
