Do you have to mix oil with the gas in a chrysler 45 hp outboard boat motor?
I just bought a boat, never had one before and was wondering if i had to add oil to the gas. it is
a chrysler 45 hp engine.
Answer
This completely depends on what engine you have
. it may be a 4 stroke and doesnt require oil and gas mix. you can tell if you look at the cylinder head and see of there are valves. also look if there is a place to put or change the oil.
the difference between a 2 and 4 stroke is that the 2 stroke doesnt have valves (maybe a reed valve by the carb that lets fuel air mixture go one way and not the other) it uses oil in the gas to lubricate the crank shaft.
a 4 stroke engine is like your car where you have
seperate oil for the crank shaft that needs to be changed. dont mistake this oil for the lower unit oil, which needs oil to lubricate the parts going to the propeller.
you can usually tell by the noise that the engine makes. 2 strokes sound different than 4 stroke engines. if you dont know the difference, you should ask a mechanic.
the last answer was nice
for the ratio of oil that you should use.
