2000 bmw 323i check engine light on and off?

My 2000 323i has in the past week had the "service engine soon" light come on, then go off, then come on, and now its off and has not come back on again. i recently had the oil changed (within the past 2 weeks) and ething seems to be running fine. should i take it in and have them hook it up for the code? will the code even pull if the light is not on?any advise would be helpful!thanks for your time : )
Answer
I have the same car. check your gas cap to make sure it is on tight (twist it until it clicks.) this is a common problem with modern cars, when the emissions control system checks for any vacuum leaks in the fuel system. if this is the problem, then it will take several more driving cycles (ignition on & off) to clear the fault code.if this is not the problem, then have the bmw dealer or independent bmw mechanic download the fault code. and yes, the codes are stored in the computers memory. i forgot how many, but i think at least 5 are stored.if you want to pull your own codes, take a look at this tool from peake research. i have one and use it to read the fault codes and reset the oil and inspection indications.peake research r5/fcx-ii scan/reset tool $149.have a nice weekend.
