Should i buy a used bmw - or will i waiste money on maintance?

I would like to by a used bmw - maybe 1997 or osmething - around 145,000 miles - will this just cause me to waist loads of money on expensive bmw repairs - --- shoul i juts go with a cheap jap. car?

If you are a person of taste and want to stand out buy a bmw. if you just want to get from point a to point b then buy japanese. the bmw is worth any money you have to put out in repairs.
