Car Repair

I had a split in the heater hose and i spliced in a repair, which i thought would correct my overheating problem, but the car still overheats shortly after starting it and driving it for a mile or so. what could the problem be?

1 check fluid level and 50/50 coolant. 2 change thermostate 3 check fan and hoses [hoses can flatten out at high temp] 4 replace water pump [they do wear out]
