Answer
I own 2006 toyota highlander hybrid. it seats 7, and i tow a 5,000 lb trailer with it. it holds about 17 gallons in the tank and i get about 26 mpg. toyota claims it will travel 600 miles on a tank of gas. the electric motor is powered by regenerative batteries, and get charged when you use the brake on the vehicle. the gas use varies by your driving style (do you accelerate quickly? do you coast to the red light? do you like to pass people? do you drive more than the speed limit?) i also have an all electric 2002 toyota rav4, which uses a "plug in" to charge. of course, no gas - ever. my house has a huge solar system, electricity is free for me (after the 8 year payback.) it feels great to drive by the gas stations.
