look at the situation in the middle east and you will find the answer. oil is the most crucial commodity in the world and unfortunatley it is one of the main sources of wars in the mid. east and why the americas are in constant battle about this product. if we started eliminating fuel/oil based cars, it would set the world in chaos in terms of trade etc. we have put it up on such a high pedestal, it is impossible to simply switch to electric or other cleaner fuel sources. this boggles my mind when i think that each continent has its own sources of oil/gas and why we have to import/export it (especially over the sea which causes too blokey oil spills and loss of wildlife etc.) is something that was started a long time ago and the u.s. & middle east probably will never change their ways since they have so much at stake, especially in what matters to them most...$$$$!
