Car audio amp question..?
I just bought one 12" alpine type-r sub (4+4ohms). and a mono-channel alpine m-450 amp rated at 500w @ 2ohms, 220w @ 4 ohms. i heard if i wire the sub with the 4 ohms i will only get 110w of power. i this true? is that underpowering the sub by much? and will it sound good?
Answer
The 450 is rated 220x1@4ohm and 400x1@2ohm.at only 4 ohms, you would have to turn the gain all the way up achieve desired sound level, but this increases the chance of clipping(distortion) and will damage the sub after repeatedly doing so. this sub has a 500 watt rms(continuous) and 1500 watt peak, so 220 watts peak would be barely to properly move this speaker, and underpowering a sub is worse than overpowering it. so your answer run it at 4 ohms in the largest size sealed box it recommends and you should be satisfied with your purchase
