Car Battery

Do car air conditioning systems run on gas or the car battery?

Sorry for any spelling mistakes, but do you guys know? i just remember my mom always yelling how she didnt wanna waste her gas on a/c, and now that i have my own car, (finally!) i am just curious, becasue with gas prices this high, im looking for anyway to reduce wasting gas. stick to my question, and not giving me suggestions on how to cut back on my gas in other ways. thanks!
Answer
The a/c system mainly uses gas as it`s primary energy. the compressor runs off the serpentine belt (what used to be called the fan belt) by a clutch that is activated when you turn your a/c on. this creates considerable drag on your engine, the same as your alternator or water pump. the fan (blower), runs off electricity, which is generated by the alternator, which puts drag on the engine, which makes it use more gas. ultimately, all the electricity your cars utilizes comes from your gas tank.
