Whats that noise?
I was driving home last night and suddenly i heard a grinding noise coming from the front of my car. could it be the wheel bearing? i managed to drive home with it squealing, (not far).sometimes the squealing stopped for a while then started. it got worse when i steered to the right.shall i take the wheel off and have a look?it is a volkswagen passat tdi 1.9 turbo diesel. i have had the cambelt changed not long back. any ideas before i get the jack out or what to look for? or a nice website/forum?hope you can help.

Know it all might be right.had some squealing for the past bit or it was 5 months ago then went away?does the grinding only occur during braking?the squeal is all the time?the squeal gets worse when turning a certain direction?this would be a sign that your brake pads are totally consumed and the backing plate has contacted the rotor which may have already be ruined- patently unsafe to drive !hope this helps you out, sorryase cert auto tech, shop owner
