Have taken off main bolts holding tank on but want to know how to take hosing off without spilling gas.

All the previous answers were right. since you have the tank off however, do a visual of the inside of the tank. is there rust? get some clean 1/4" chain...two feet should suffice, and throw it in the tank. shake the tank vigorously. this will remove the debris and scrape most of the rust off the tank and keep it from running through your cards. bad stuff that rust. discard of the gas and rinse with some fresh gas. pick up an inline fuel filter and install as well. maybe more that what you were looking for, but will pay off in spades.
