Pontiac gran am overheats?

What causes my car to over heat? it overheats at idle. fan does not automatically kick on. with the heater or ac on it does. shop says not fan motor or switch. gonna have to pay dealership prices without help. out of nowhere, sitting still it got to 220 degrees. problem ever since. any help out there?
