If you are going to attempt this on your own, i suggest you buy a service manual (haynes, chilton etc) from a local autostore as opposed to asking for vaugue instructions from internet users. the manuals run about 20 bucks each.
look for one for a mercury mystique/ford countour/ and probably 99-02 mecury cougar info will be there as well in the same book)
