Is it necessary to come to a complete stop in an automatic transmission jeep wrangler tj to engage 4wd?
Do i need to completely stop and put the jeep in nuetral to engage 4wd or to shift from 4l to 4h or vice versa?
Answer
Here goes another jeep 4wd description. the newer jeeps have shift on the fly 4wd so you can engage 4wd high at any speed up to 55mph. a shift to 4wd low range has to be done while the jeep is rolling at about 2-3mph in order for the gears in the transfercase to mesh, and the transmission must be in neutral. from 4l to 4h the vehicle needs to be going 2-3mph and transmission in neutral to avoid transfercase damage as the gear ratios from 4l to 4h are different a grinding noise can be heard when completing the shift from 4h to 4l and vise versa, this is normal. also when shifting from 4h to 4l do as the same as shifting from 2h to 4l always slow down to 2-3mph before attempting the shift.
