I have heard there is a process to remove this that a person can perform- such as open the door and turning the key to the accessory position and performing some procedure- greatful for any insight into this.?

If the airbags have been deployed the light will stay on until the airbags have been replaced along with the module that fired them off.it means the system no longer works.
